The modal verbs "können" and "dürfen"
There are 6 modal verbs in the german language. They are used to express wish, compulsion, obligation, likelihood or possibility. In a sentence modal verbs usually occur with a second verb, the main verb. The main verb is in the infinitive at the end of the sentence. The modal verb is conjugated and displays the person.

* The modal verb "mögen" is often used in the subjunctive form (Konjunktiv II; "möchten") to express a particularly polite form.
The use of können and dürfen
The modal verb "dürfen" is used in the following situations:
- Give a permission
- Die Kinder dürfen heute länger aufbleiben. (Ihre Eltern haben es erlaubt.)
The children are allowed to stay up longer today. (Their parents allowed it.)
- Du bist 18 Jahre alt. Du darfst jetzt wählen. (Das Gesetz erlaubt es.)
You are 18 years old. You are allowed to vote now. (The law allows it.)
- Er darf das Auto seines Vaters fahren. (Sein Vater hat es erlaubt.)
He is allowed to drive his father's car. (His father allowed it.)
- Pronounce prohibitions / prohibit something (dürfen + negation)
- Die Kinder dürfen heute nicht länger aufbleiben. (Ihre Eltern haben es verboten.)
The children are not allowed to stay up today. (Their parents have forbidden it.)
- Im Museum darf man nicht rauchen. (Die Direktion verbietet es.)
You must not smoke in the museum. (The directorate forbids it.)
- Die Kinder dürfen diesen Film nicht sehen. (Sie sind noch zu jung, deswegen haben die Eltern es verboten).
The children are not allowed to see this movie. (They are still too young, so the parents forbade it).
- To express suspicions carefully (suspect / believe something); dürfen in the subjunctive form (Konjunktiv II)
- Dauert es noch lange? – Es dürfte wohl noch eine Stunde dauern.
Does it still take a long time? – It should probably take another hour.
- Wie alt er wohl ist? – Er dürfte um die 80 (Jahre alt) sein.
How old is he? – He should be around 80 (years old).
- Wie viele CDs hast du? – Es dürften jetzt so um die 1000 (CDs) sein.
How many CDs do you have? – It should be about 1000 (CDs) now.
The modal verb "können" is used in the following situations:
- Give a permission
- Dürfen wir heute länger aufbleiben? – Ja, ihr könnt. (Die Eltern geben den Kindern die Erlaubnis, länger aufzubleiben.)
May we stay up late today? - Yes, you can. (Parents give children permission to stay up longer.)
- Have an ability (have learned something)
- Hans kann gut Klavier spielen (Er hat dafür viel geübt.)
Hans can play the piano well (He practiced a lot for that)
- Ich kann Auto fahren. (Ich habe es in der Fahrschule gelernt.)
I can drive a car. (I learned it in the driving school.)
- Können Sie Deutsch (sprechen)? – Ein wenig, ich lerne es gerade.
Do you speak german? - A little, I'm learning it right now.
- Have a possibility
- Deutsch kann man lernen.
German can be learned.
- Du kannst mein Auto haben. Ich brauche es heute nicht.
You can have my car. I do not need it today.
- Wir fahren morgen nach Berlin. Ihr könnt mitfahren, wenn ihr wollt.
We're going to Berlin tomorrow. You can go with us, if you want.
- Draw a conclusion from something
- Claudia ist heute nicht zur Arbeit gekommen. Dann kann sie eigentlich nur krank sein.
Claudia did not come to work today. Thus, she can only be ill.
- Dieses Restaurant hat immer viele Gäste, dann kann das Essen ja nur gut sein.
This restaurant always has many guests, so the food can only be good.
- Martinas Auto steht nicht im Hof. Dann kann sie nicht zu Hause sein.
Martinas car is not in the yard. So she can not be at home.
- Expressing inability (können + negation)
- Claudia kann nicht Klavier spielen. (Sie hat es nicht gelernt.)
Claudia can not play the piano. (She did not learn it.)
- Ich kann mir dieses Auto nicht kaufen. Es ist zu teuer.
I can not buy this car. It is too expensive.
- Peter kann heute nicht zur Arbeit kommen. Er ist krank.
Peter can not come to work today. He is sick.
- Express an impossibility (können + negation)
- Kein Mensch kann ohne Sauerstoff überleben.
No human can survive without oxygen.
- Pferde können nicht fliegen.
Horses can not fly.
- Wir können bei diesem Schneesturm unmöglich auf den Berg steigen.
It is impossible for us to climb the mountain in this blizzard.
- Express a presumption or hypothetical possibility; to guess something (können in the subjunctive form Konjunktiv II)
- Heute könnte es noch Schnee geben.
There could be snow today.
- Wenn ich reich wäre, könnte ich mir alles kaufen.
If I was rich, I could buy everything.
- Wo ist denn der Hammer? – Er könnte in der Kiste oder im Schrank sein.
Where is the hammer? - He could be in the box or in the cabinet.
