The use of sollen and müssen
The modal verb "sollen" is used in the following situations:
- Transmitting orders / instructions
- Ihre Sekretärin hat gesagt, dass Sie sofort Ihren Chef anrufen sollen.
Your secretary has said that you should call your boss immediately.
- Wenn du ihn siehst, sag ihm bitte, dass er mich sofort anrufen soll.
When you see him, please tell him to call me immediately.
- Ich soll hier ein Paket abholen.
I'm supposed to pick up a parcel here.
- Expressing orders / commands
- Ich habe gesagt, dass Sie mich anrufen sollen!
I told you to call me!
- Kinder, ihr sollt zuerst eure Hausaufgaben machen!
Children, you should do your homework first!
- Sie sollen mehr Gemüse essen.
You should (You're supposed to) eat more vegetables.
- Hearing / starting rumours
- Ich habe gehört, Google soll Pleite sein.
I've heard Google is supposed to be bankrupt.
- Die Leute erzählen sich, dass Herr Müller geschieden ist. Er soll aber eine neue Freundin haben.
People are telling that Mr. Müller is divorced. But he is said to have a new girlfriend.
- Die neue Freundin von Herrn Müller soll sehr viel Geld haben.
The new girlfriend of Mr. Miller is supposed to have a lot of money.
- Obeying the laws / observing regulations, the Ten Commandments
- Du sollst nicht töten.
You shall not kill!
- Man soll die Verkehrsregeln beachten.
One should observe the traffic rules.
- Man soll immer die Wahrheit sagen.
One shall always tell the truth.
- For the purpose of something
- Diese Beispiele sollen Ihnen helfen, den Gebrauch der Modalverben zu verstehen.
These examples should help you to understand the use of modal verbs.
- Die neue Software soll Menschen mit Behinderung helfen, einen Computer zu bedienen.
The new software is supposed (designed) to help people with disabilities to operate a computer.
- Wir sollen weniger Müll produzieren, um die Natur zu schützen.
We're supposed to / We should produce less waste to protect nature.
The modal verb "müssen" is used in the following situations:
- Expressing commands
- Sie müssen die Strasse frei machen! Es kommt ein überbreiter Schwertransporter.
You must clear the road! There's a wide load heavy goods vehicle coming.
- Sie müssen diesen Vertrag unterschreiben!
You have to sign this contract!
- Du musst jetzt gehen! Dein Zug kommt gleich.
You must go now! Your train is arriving soon.
- Expressing that something does not have to (= Negation + brauchen zu + infinitive)
- Du musst das nicht essen, wenn es Dir nicht schmeckt. – Wenn es Dir nicht schmeckt, brauchst Du das nicht zu essen.
You do not need to eat this, if you don't like it.
- Du bist schon 18 (Jahre alt). Du musst mich nicht mehr fragen, wenn Du ausgehen willst. – Du bist schon 18 (Jahre alt). Du brauchst mich nicht mehr zu fragen, wenn Du ausgehen willst.
You're already 18 (years old). You don't need to ask me anymore, if you want to go out.
- Hier sind Sie sicher. Sie müssen keine Angst haben. – Hier sind Sie sicher. Sie brauchen keine Angst zu haben.
You are save here. You don't need to be afraid.
- Expressing a need
- Wenn man Deutsch lernen will, muss man die Modalverben kennen.

- Ein Bäcker muss jeden Tag sehr früh aufstehen.
A baker has to get up very early every day.
- Sportler müssen täglich hart trainieren, wenn sie Erfolg haben wollen.
Athletes have to train hard daily, if they want to be sucessful.
- Expressing a conclusion
- Wenn man kein Auto hat, muss man den Bus nehmen oder laufen.
If you don't have a car, you need to take the bus or walk.
- Die Strasse ist nass. Es muss geregnet haben.
The road is wet. It must have been raining.
- Klaus hat ein Bein in Gips. Er muss einen Unfall gehabt haben.
Klaus has a leg in plaster. He must have had an accident.
